How do I fix the error "Unable to Check In a Sharepoint Document"?


All faculty, staff and students have the ability to troubleshoot an error in Sharepoint.

There are two errors commonly seen when working with Sharepoint's check-in system:

The first will return this error message when trying to check a document back in:

  • "UPLOAD FAILED We're sorry this didn't work. Try saving later and if that still doesn't work, click Save a Copy."
  • This error can be avoided by saving your document before closing & checking it back in, using the save icon in the upper left hand corner of the document window.

The other will return this message, even though you are the user who has the document checked out:

  • "FileName is locked for editing by another user".
  • The second error message can be worked around by waiting 10 minutes before attempting to edit the document again.  If editing of the document is required sooner, you can save a copy of it to your computer and then add it back to the Sharepoint folder as a new document that you will then be able to edit.
