How do I authorize a parent/guardian to communicate with UNCW staff regarding my FERPA protected academic information?
How do I set up or change a parent/guardian FERPA proxy?
Answer
All students have the ability to set up any parent/guardian with the authority to discuss and communicate their FERPA protected academic information with UNCW faculty and staff. This is known as a parent/guardian FERPA proxy.
To Authorize a New Parent/Guardian FERPA Proxy.
- Navigate to mySeaport » Students » Records » Parent/Guardian FERPA Authorization
- Choose Add New

- Fill in all required information
- Parent/Guardian First and Last Name
- Parent/Guardian Email
- Parent/Guardian Relationship Type. (Parent/Guardian is the only option.)
- Authorization Start and Stop Dates
- Parent/Guardian Relationship Description. (I.e. Father or Mother, etc.)
- Parent/Guardian Self-Identification Phrase.
TECH TIP: Parent/Guardian Self-Identification Phrase is not a password! This is a personally selected to phrase for a Parent/Guardian to use to identify themselves when communicating with UNCW staff.

Select the "Add" or "Update" button.
- Choose the individual pieces of academic information you would like to authorize for your proxy. Options are:
- General Student Profile Information
- Grades and Transcript Information
- Student Holds Information
- Class Schedule Information
- Advising Appointment Comments and Notes
- Financial Aid Information
- Click Submit to finish
*Please note:
- You are encouraged to provide a description of relationships and a personal identification phrase. Parents/guardians will use this information to verify their identity when communicating with UNCW staff.
- Keep in mind the default duration for authorizations is 1 year. You will be reminded when the authorization is about to expire so that you can extend the duration if needed.
- Parent/Guardian FERPA Proxy is not the application for granting 3rd party access to your eBill. You can find more information about how to setting up an authorized user for access to your eBill at this UNCW Student Accounts website.
