Answer
All students have the ability to set up any parent/guardian with the authority to discuss and communicate their FERPA-protected academic information with UNCW faculty and staff. This is known as a parent/guardian FERPA proxy.
How can I be granted authority to communicate with UNCW staff about my student's FERPA-protected information?
- Students must set up a FERPA Proxy to grant a parent/guardian the authority to communicate FERPA-protected academic information with UNCW staff.
- Set up or edit your Parent/Guardian FERPA Proxy: Students can follow the steps in this article to set up a Parent/Guardian FERPA Proxy.
- When creating the proxy, students are encouraged to provide a relationship description and a personal identification phrase in the Parent/Guardian FERPA Proxy App. Parents/guardians will use this information to verify their identity when communicating with UNCW Staff.
- The default authorization period is one calendar year from the initial setup date. Students will receive reminders before expiration and can adjust the dates within the app at that time.
Authorization Options
Students can authorize any or all of the following six categories of information normally protected by FERPA:
- General Student Profile Information
- Grades and Transcript Information
- Student Holds Information
- Class Schedule Information
- Advising Appointment Comments and Notes
- Financial Aid Information
*Please note: Parent/Guardian FERPA Proxy is not the application for granting 3rd party access to your eBill. You can find more information about how to set up an authorized user for access to an eBill at this UNCW Student Accounts website.
