All faculty, staff and students have the ability to open and save files in SPSS through Horizon.
*Please note: UNCW has a Network license for SPSS for teaching and unpaid academic research. This means the software can be installed on faculty or lab computers (Mac or Windows) as long as the research being done is unpaid. This Network license includes SSPS Base, Regression, and Advanced.
If you are in a non-academic area or need SPSS for paid research, please contact itssoftwaremgmt@uncw.edu for a quote. You will need to let Tami know what modules you would like and whether or not the research you are doing is paid. IBM will be contacted for a quote.

Use SPSS through Horizon by following the instructions below.
Open SPSS in the Horizon Client
*Please note:
Chromebook (Chrome OS) users: You must use Horizon HTML Access instead of installing the Horizon client. You will not be prompted to enable drive sharing in step 3.
- Open the installed Horizon client on your computer, and log in using your UNCW username (e.g., abc1234) and password. Unless you are using a Chromebook, do not use the Web (HTML) version in your browser. For more information, follow the article How do I Install and Configure Horizon?
- Double click on “UNCW_Desktop.” It will take a moment or two to fully load.
-
On the “Drive Sharing” window, select “Allow” so that you can save your files (data sets) to your physical computer.
Windows (PC):
Mac:
TECH TIP: If you have multiple monitors, select the “Fullscreen” drop-down menu and select the monitor you want to show the virtual desktop on.
- Once the UNCW Desktop has fully loaded, double-click on the “IBM SPSS Statistics [version number]” icon on the desktop. SPSS will take a moment or two to launch.
*Please note: If you don't see the "IBM SPSS Statistics [version number]” icon on the desktop, end the session by selecting the "X" on the top toolbar, and open the UNCW_Desktop again.
Open and Save Files
*Please note: You will open from and save to your “Network Drive.” To avoid data loss, do not save anywhere else. This drive mirrors your physical computer hard drive. The Network Drive may have a letter next to it different from the screenshot below.
Chromebooks and mobile devices: The Network Drive is not available. Instead, you must open and save through OneDrive using the instructions below. To avoid data loss, do not save anywhere else.
Open From and Save to the Network Drive from Windows File Explorer
Open From and Save to OneDrive from Windows File Explorer
If you use OneDrive on your physical computer [Windows instructions; macOS instructions] you may open from and save to the “OneDrive – UNC-Wilmington” folder within your Network Drive. Do not open from and save to the folder labeled only "OneDrive."
Open From and Save to the Network Drive from the File > “Open” or “Save” Menus in SPSS:
If you were to open any folder here, it will mirror what is saved to your physical computer. If you use OneDrive on your physical computer [Windows instructions; macOS instructions] you may open from and save to the “OneDrive – UNC-Wilmington” folder within your Network Drive in SPSS. Do not open from and save to the folder labeled only "OneDrive."
