Windows 11 Upgrade is Required
- Microsoft is ending support for Windows 10 on Oct. 14, 2025. To ensure the security of university devices and data, it’s important we transition to Windows 11 before this deadline. Starting Feb. 5, 2025, we will begin deploying Windows 11 to campus machines.
Can My Device Run Windows 11?
- A few machines on campus are ineligible for the Windows 11 upgrade. We will be providing further guidance directly to those individuals in early spring 2025.
How Upgrading Your Device Works
- You will receive a Windows notification prompting you to restart your device for the upgrade.
- You then have up to 14 days to choose a convenient time for the restart before it becomes mandatory.
- The upgrade process is simple and usually takes about 30 minutes, though the time can vary.
- All your files, documents, and applications will remain on your computer after the upgrade is complete.
Upgrade Expectations for Connected Devices, Software, Data & Personalization Settings
Connected Devices (Printers, Monitors, etc.)
- ITS has tested all known supported connected devices with Windows 11. If you're unsure about your device, please check your vendor’s website for Windows 11 compatibility. If you can't find any information, please submit a Computer Setup Request for University Owned Computers and select “Request a Computer Consultation” from the “Service Type” list.
Software
*Please note: If you are an SSRS report writer, please wait to upgrade until ITS contacts you directly.
Data & Personalization Settings
TECH TIP: For best results, store all UNCW-related data on OneDrive or other supported network storage. If you have local data, we strongly recommend backing it up to OneDrive or another supported network storage.
- ITS has tested the upgrade process on devices with local data, ensuring that user data and personalization are maintained.
- After upgrading, you may need to re-associate file types with default applications (e.g., voicemail WAV files and PDFs in Outlook).

Windows 10 on Current Device & Awaiting a New Lifecycle Machine
- If your new device will arrive before October 14, 2025, you can continue using your current/old device on Windows 10. If your new device will arrive after this date, you will need to upgrade your old device to Windows 11 if it's compatible
3 Considerations for Rolling Back to Windows 10
- You must provide a valid reason. Please note that rollback requests without sufficient justification may not be approved.
- You must submit a Computer Consultation Request within seven days of upgrading to initiate the rollback.
