How do I Set Up a VPN Connection on a Mac? (New VPN Client)

Answer

All faculty, staff and students have the ability to set up a VPN connection off-campus on personal computers and on UNCW-owned Apple computers.

  1. Go to https://vpn.uncw.edu.

  2. Type in your UNCW username and password. The "Second Password" field is for Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), which uses DUO. Please type one of the following, and then click "Login:"
    • "bypass" - Type this if you are not enrolled in MFA, which uses DUO.
    • "push" - DUO will send a push notification to your registered phone with the DUO app installed.
    • "sms" - DUO will send a text message to your registered phone. The initial login will fail, and you will need to re-enter your username, password and the text code that was just sent to you.
    • Type in the one-time code generated by your key fob or DUO app.

VPN Login Screen showing "group," "username," "password," and "2nd password" fields.

  3. In the bottom right-hand corner, please click "Instructions."

  4. If you receive a prompt asking if you want to "Allow the download," click "Yes."

  5. You may be prompted to "Allow a Cisco System Extension." If you are not prompted, please continue to #7 in these instructions.

  6. If so, open "System Preferences," and go to "Security & Privacy." Click Allow.

  7. Follow the Cisco AnyConnect install instructions (below is a screen shot of those instructions found on the https://vpn.uncw.edu page), and stop after you complete "Step 9." Do not complete "Step 10." Please come back to these instructions to finish the AnyConnect install.

  8. When you get to "Step 10," please type the following in the Cisco AnyConnect client: vpn.uncw.edu

  9. Click "Connect."

  10. In the new dialog box, type in your UNCW username and password. Remember, the "Second Password" field is for Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), which uses DUO. Please type one of the following:
    • "bypass" - Type this if you are not enrolled in MFA, which uses DUO.
    • "push" - DUO will send a push notification to your registered phone with the DUO app installed.
    • "sms" - DUO will send a text message to your registered phone. The initial login will fail, and you will need to re-enter your username, password and the text code that was just sent to you.
    • Type in the one-time code generated by your key fob or DUO app.

  11. Click "Ok" to connect. Once you have finished with your UNCW work, click "Disconnect" in the AnyConnect client, as connections may be slower when using VPN.

  12. The next time you launch the AnyConnect client, your login screen will change slightly. You will see a "DUO Option" field in place of the "Second Password" field.

*Please note: Connections may be slower when using VPN. It is recommended you disconnect when finished with your UNCW work
