How do I Connect my Personally-owned Mac to UNCW's Network via Ethernet in my Residence Hall?

Answer

All students have the ability to use an Ethernet connection with their personally-owned Mac in a residence hall.

*Please note: If your Mac doesn't have an Ethernet port (most Macbook Pro and Air models), you will need to purchase an Ethernet adapter (e.g., USB to Ethernet or USB-C to Ethernet). ITS and Housing & Residence Life do not provide adapters.

This article applies to personally-owned Macs only. All UNCW-owned computers are pre-configured to connect to Ethernet. If you have connection issues with your UNCW device, please submit a Wired and Wireless Device Connection Issues service request.

Connect your Mac to Ethernet

  1. Plug the Ethernet cable into your Mac and the other end into the data port in your room.
  2.  Write down your data port number (reference the knowledge article "How do I Find my Data Port?") and Ethernet MAC address. Only the Ethernet MAC address is needed if your data port does not have a number.

To locate your Ethernet MAC address:

Click: System Preferences > Network > Select your Ethernet connection on the left sidebar > Advanced > Hardware tab.

The MAC address is displayed (May also be labeled "Ethernet ID").

TECH TIP: MAC addresses only use the characters A-F or a-f and the numbers 0-9.

  3. Submit a service request for ITS to make the necessary changes to allow the connection. This service request must include your dorm building, room number, data port number (if applicable), and Ethernet MAC address.

*Please note: Please wait for an email confirmation from ITS that the changes have been made before proceeding further. Please allow at least 1-2 business days.

  4. Reconnect the Ethernet cable. When prompted to enter credentials for the network, enter your UNCW username (e.g., abc1234) and password, and then click "OK."

If you need further assistance, please submit a service request or CHAT with TAC.
