What is Nudge and how do I use it on my UNCW-owned Mac?

Answer

Nudge is an open source application, implemented at UNCW, to keep the operating systems of university-owned Macs up-to-date.  All university-owned Macs (laptops and desktops) should have Nudge installed.  It is currently configured to alert for minor updates (patches in your current operating system) only.

When Nudge alerts a client, as long as the deadline has not passed, there are two choices they can make:

  1. Update Mac (top right part of screen) or

  2. Defer (bottom right part of screen)

Defer can be selected with the following options:

  • Later – will notify again in 30 minutes
  • One Hour – will notify again in 1 hour
  • One Day – will notify again in 24 hours
  • Custom – can select a date/time

Please note: the left portion of the window shows “Days Remaining To Update.”  It is strongly recommended you update your Mac BEFORE the deadline, so you can select a time that is most convenient for you.  Once this counter hits 0, you will no longer be able to defer and you will be notified every 20 minutes until you update your Mac.
