How do I Set Up a VPN (Virtual Private Network) on my Windows PC Computer? (New VPN Client)

All faculty, staff and students have the ability to connect to the VPN on a Windows computer.

*Please note: If you are currently logged in to the OLD VPN client, please disconnect from that before proceeding.


Install VPN on a UNCW-owned Computer:
 

  1. If you are using a UNCW-owned computer, access the Software Center from your Start menu (or type "Software Center" in the search field on your Taskbar to locate). For additional help with Software Center, please visit the "How do I Use Software Center (PC)" knowledge base article.
     
  2. Once you are in Software Center, click on the "Cisco AnyConnect New Client."

  3. Click "Install."

  4. When complete, you will see this screen:

  5. Launch Cisco AnyConnect Client located in your Start Menu.

  6. Type in your UNCW username and password. The "Second Password" field is for Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), which uses DUO. Please type one of the following:
    • "bypass" - Type this if you are not enrolled in MFA.
    • "push" - DUO will send a push notification to your registered phone with the DUO app installed.
    • "sms" - DUO will send a text message to your registered phone. The initial login will fail, and you will need to re-enter your username, password and the text code that was just sent to your phone.
    • Type in the one-time code generated by your key fob or DUO app.

  7. Click "Ok" to connect. Once you have finished with your UNCW work, click "Disconnect" in the AnyConnect client, as connections may be slower when using VPN.
     
  8. The next time you launch the AnyConnect client, your login screen will change slightly. You will see a "DUO Option" field in place of the "Second Password" field.

Install VPN on a Personal Computer:
 

*Please note: You cannot download the AnyConnect client using the Edge browser. Please use Chrome or Firefox to download this software.

 

  1. If you are installing the new Cisco AnyConnect client on your personal computer, go to https://vpn.uncw.edu.
     
  2. Type in your UNCW username and password. The "Second Password" field is for Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), which uses DUO. Please type one of the following then click "Login."
    • "bypass" - Type this if you are not enrolled in MFA.
    • "push" - DUO will send a push notification to your registered phone with the DUO app installed.
    • "sms" - DUO will send a text message to your registered phone. The initial login will fail, and you will need to re-enter your username, password and the text code that was just sent to your phone.

  3. In the bottom right-hand corner, click "Instructions."

  4. Please follow the Cisco AnyConnect install instructions (below is a screenshot of those instructions found on the https://vpn.uncw.edu page), and stop after you complete "Step 8." Do not complete "Step 9." Please come back to these instructions to finish the AnyConnect install.

  5. Launch Cisco AnyConnect Client located in your Windows Start Menu.

  6. If you see “asa” as shown in the image below, close the authentication window, and type: vpn.uncw.edu

  7. Click "Connect."

  9. Click "Ok" to connect. Once you have finished with your UNCW work, click "Disconnect" in the AnyConnect client, as connections may be slower when using VPN.
     
  10. The next time you launch the AnyConnect client, your login screen will change slightly. You will see a "DUO Option" field in place of the "Second Password" field.

*Please note: Connections may be slower when using VPN. It is recommended you disconnect when finished with your UNCW work.
