How do I Resolve Issues with my UNCW-owned Windows Computer Not Detecting Headphones or Earbuds?

Answer

All faculty, staff and students have the ability to resolve issues with their UNCW-owned Windows computer not detecting headphones or earbuds when plugged in.

*Please note: If the computer is in a classroom, disregard these instructions. If you are currently in the classroom, dial "1" on the classroom phone. Otherwise, submit a service request.

  1. Plug the headphones or earbuds into the 3.5 mm audio-out port on your computer and test to see if the sound plays.

  2. If no sound plays, verify that the headphones or earbuds are selected as the sound output device by following the "Check your speaker output" section of the "Fix sound or audio problems in Windows" Microsoft knowledge article.

  3. If the headphones or earbuds are not shown as a sound output device, install "Realtek Audio" from the Software Center and restart your computer.  For more information, review the knowledge article article "How do I Use Software Center (Windows) and Self Service (Mac) on my UNCW-owned Computer?"

If you need further assistance, please submit a service request or CHAT with TAC.
