How do I set up a VPN (Virtual Private Network) connection on my Windows computer?


All faculty, staff and students have the ability to connect to the VPN on a Windows computer.

*Please note: If you already have VPN installed and are receiving a "No license" error, uninstall and follow these instructions. These instructions will work with Windows 7 - 10. Additionally, both the download and the VPN client will only work off-campus. You can call or bring your computer to TAC if you need assistance setting up VPN. 


  1. Open "Internet Explorer" and type Enter your UNCW username and password.
  2. On the left sidebar, select "Anyconnect."
  3. Then choose "Start Anyconnect."
  4. Acknowledge the IE security warning (if it occurs) by clicking “OK.”
  5. The download may fail, which will present a message containing a link. Click the link as advised by the error message. 
  6. When prompted by Internet Explorer select “Run.”
  7. Once the program has fully downloaded, the installation wizard will appear. Click "next" to continue.
  8. After the installation is complete click “Finish.”
  9. Launch the "Cisco Anyconnect" program that just installed.
    • In Windows 7 and 10, press the windows logo on your keyboard and type "Cisco Anyconnect" into the search bar on the bottom left.
    • In Windows 8, return to the main screen by pressing the Windows key and type “VPN.” This will automatically present a search box on the right side of the screen with “Cisco AnyConnect” being the first result. Launch “Cisco AnyConnect.” 
  10.  After opening AnyConnect, your screen will return to the desktop at which time you should see the application in the bottom right corner of the screen. Enter “” into the empty box and click Connect.

  11.  After selecting "Connect" you will be prompted to enter your domain credentials (which is identical to your email login information).
  12. To connect again, just start from step 9 above, going through step 11 by pressing the "Connect" button.


*Please note: Connections may be slower when using VPN, it is recommended you disconnect when finished with your UNCW work.
