How do I set up a VPN connection on a Mac?

Answer

All faculty, staff and students have the ability to set up a VPN connection off-campus on personal computers and on UNCW-owned Apple computers.

*Please note: You will need to make sure you have Java (http://java.com) installed before following the steps below.

 

Method 1
 

  1. Open a Web browser, and go to https://asa.uncw.edu. (This link will only work if you are off campus.)

  2. Log on with your UNCW username (without the @uncw.edu) and password.
     
  3. Select "Download."
     
  4. The installed client will have an icon like this:

  5. Double click the icon to open the application.
     
  6. A text box like the one shown below will appear:

  7. Type "asa.uncw.edu" into the text box and click "connect."
     
  8. You will be asked to log in with your UNCW username and password.
     
  9. You will now be connected to UNCW's VPN.


Method 2
 

  1. Open "System Preferences."
     
  2. Select "Network."

  3. Click the " + " button.

  4. Enter the settings below in the window that appears, and select "Create."

    "Interface: VPN" "VPN Type: Cisco IPSec" "Service Name: UNCW VPN"
     
  5. Enter "asa.uncw.edu" for your address, and your UNCW username and password.

  6. Select "Authentication Settings" and type "seahawk" for "shared secret." 
     
  7. Type "UNCW_VPN" for "group name."

    *Please Note: These are case sensitive.

  8. Select the VPN icon in the menu bar and click "connect."  (You will be able to connect and disconnect from VPN with this menu.)

*Please note: If you already have VPN software installed and are receiving a No License error, uninstall the client and follow these instructions.
