How do I use my temporary Administrator Access on a UNCW-owned computer?

Faculty and staff who have been approved for administrator access on their UNCW-owned computer may follow this article.

*Admin Access Agreement:  I acknowledge I will use this service in compliance with all UNCW policies and not modify the existing system or security settings of either the vendor or the university. If using this service to install or update software/systems, I will ensure the software/system is from a reputable source and kept current and secure.


*Please note: You can be approved for either permanent administrator access* or temporary administrator access lasting only for a predefined period. For example, ITS may provide temporary administrator access to complete a service request.

* If you have a business need for permanent administrator access, you must first submit a service request for consideration.

Windows (PC) Instructions
 

*Please note: If you are off-campus, you must first connect to the Virtual Private Network (VPN) and remain connected for the rest of the day.

  1. After notification that you have been given temporary or permanent administrator access by ITS, perform the action that requires administrator access (e.g., installing approved software).
     
  2. When prompted for credentials on the "User Account Control" window, you will enter different credentials depending on if you have temporary or permanent administrator access. The window will look different than the below image depending on the action you are performing.

    Permanent: Enter your UNCW username and password

    Temporary:
    • Username: .\administrator
    • Password: Provided by ITS
       
  3. Click "Yes."

Mac (macOS) Instructions
 

Temporary Administrator 

 

  1. After notification that you have been given temporary administrator access by ITS, open and log into Self Service.
     
  2. From the "Admin" category on the left-hand sidebar, click the "Promote" button under "Admin - Promote to Admin."

  3. A dialog box will appear with a countdown timer indicating you have administrator rights for three minutes.

  4. Perform the action that requires administrator credentials (e.g., installing approved software). When the dialog box with the padlock prompts for an administrator's name and password, enter your UNCW username and password and click "OK." The dialog box will look different than the below image depending on the action you are performing.
