How do I find my MAC Address?

Answer

Many UNCW services require a device's MAC address to function properly. How you find your MAC address varies depending on the device you are using.

Note that MAC addresses only use the characters A-F or a-f and the numbers 0-9.

Standard Operating Systems

WINDOWS 10

  1. Select the Network or Wi-Fi icon in the system tray in the lower right-hand corner, and then select the "Network & Internet settings" link.
  2. Select "Ethernet" or "Wi-Fi" on the left.
  3. In the "Properties" section, the MAC address is displayed as the "Physical Address."

MAC

  1. From the Apple menu, select "System Preferences" > "Network."
  2. Select your Network adapter on the left (Ethernet or Wi-Fi), and select "Advanced."
  3. Select the "Hardware" or "Ethernet" tab.
  4. The MAC address will be displayed at the top of this page.

LINUX

  1. Open a terminal or console window.
  2. Select "Settings."
  3. Select the name of your Wi-Fi network. Select it again. 
  4. The MAC address is displayed under the "Connection" tab as the "Hardware address."
Streaming Devices, Voice Assistants and Smart TVs

The MAC address is often found in the Settings menu. If you cannot find your device below, we recommend looking at the company website or contacting customer support. Instructions for most devices can be found online.

APPLE TV

  1. Select "Settings" > "General" > "About."
  2. The MAC address will be displayed as either "Wi-Fi Address" or "Ethernet Address."

ROKU SMART TV / STREAMING PLAYERS

  1. Select "Settings" > "System" or "Network" > "About."
  2. The wired and wireless MAC addresses are displayed.

CHROMECAST WITH GOOGLE TV

*Please note: On Chromecast with Google TV, casting from your mobile device is not compatible with our Network, but you can still stream content using the remote. Original Chromecast devices are not compatible with our Network.

AMAZON ECHO

First-time Setup

  1. Follow the instructions in the Alexa app to set up your Echo.
  2. The wireless MAC address is displayed at the bottom of the Echo Setup screen.

        Previously Setup

  1. In the Alexa app, select "More" > "Settings" > "Device Settings."
  2. Select the name of your Echo device.
  3. Select the gear icon in the upper right-hand corner > "About."
  4. The MAC address is displayed.

AMAZON FIRE TV / FIRE STICK

  1. From the Home screen, choose "Menu" > "Settings."
  2. The MAC address is located toward the bottom of the screen in the "Device Info" section.

OTHER SMART TVs

Please consult your TV manufacturer's website or customer support. On some TVs, the wired MAC address will be labeled "RJ45."

Mobile Devices

ANDROID DEVICES

  1. From the Home screen, press "Menu," or pull down from the top of the screen, or you may open your app drawer.
  2. Select "Settings" > "About Phone" or "About Tablet."
  3. The MAC address is displayed.
    • In some cases, you may have to select "Status," "Hardware Information" or similar wording.

APPLE IOS DEVICES - iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch

TECH TIP: ITS may ask that you disable private Wi-Fi addresses for Network troubleshooting.

  1. Tap "Settings" on the Home screen.
  2. Tap "General," and then tap "About."
  3. The MAC address will be displayed as "Wi-Fi Address."

Video Game Consoles

*Please note: All gaming consoles must use a wired (Ethernet) connection; therefore, you will only need to note the wired MAC address.

XBOX SERIES X/S

  1. Select "Settings" > "Network settings" > "Advanced Settings."
  2. The wired MAC address will be displayed at the right of your screen under "IP Settings."

XBOX ONE

  1. Select "Settings" > "Network" > "Network Settings" > "Advanced Settings."
  2. The wired MAC address will be displayed at the right of your screen.

XBOX 360

  1. Select "Settings" > "System" > "Network Settings" > "Wired Connection" > "Configure Network" > "Additional Settings" > "Advanced Settings."
  2. The wired MAC address will be displayed under the heading "Alternate MAC Address."

PLAYSTATION 4/5

  1. Select "Settings" > "System" > "System Information" (PS4) or "Console Information" (PS5).
  2. The wired MAC address will be displayed.

PLAYSTATION 3

  1. Select "Settings" > "System Settings" > "System Information."
  2. The wired MAC address will be displayed.
